𖤓 Behind Chogg Art 𖤓
From a young age, I was told that becoming an artist was unrealistic, and for a while, I believed it. It wasn’t until my first trip to England and Europe, away from the noise and expectations of my everyday life, that I realised I cared more about chasing what I wanted than living the life I thought I was supposed to.
I followed that feeling home and then left again, moving to Rottnest Island for eight months. Being away gave me the space to figure out who I was without everyone else’s opinions in the background. From there I travelled up the West Coast to Exmouth, where I had my first exhibition and started taking my art seriously.
Eventually, Perth pulled me back. I studied for a year, thinking that if I followed the path everyone else seemed to be taking, I’d eventually feel like I was doing the right thing. I didn’t. Turns out, I was chasing a fake life I was never going to enjoy. I learn to trust myself and go with only what I think is right.
Now I’m doing what I love, surrounded by people I love
I’m Charlotte Hogg. I paint because I’m drawn to the beauty of nature, but also because I’m interested in what sits underneath it. My work explores emotion and the different feelings a place, moment or memory can bring up. From calmness and freedom to longing and pain.
Painting has become a way of figuring myself out. I put something onto the surface and often find something in myself that I didn’t know was there. Every painting teaches me something new about who I am, how I see the world and the kind of artist I’m becoming. Pairing them with a poem deepens each paintings meaning to me.
